Civic Engagement

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

We champion civic engagement policies for our employees and use our platforms to inspire audiences to vote, get active in their communities, and increase access to voting for historically marginalized communities nationwide.

See below for our Civic Engagement work done through our Employees, Storytelling and Studios.

Employees

EMPLOYEES

Paid Civic Hours

Employees shouldn’t have to choose between voting and getting paid.

All OBB Media employees receive paid civic hours to vote in state and federal elections during election windows in either the early voting period or on Election Day.

Understanding the nationwide poll worker shortage, employees also receive paid civic hours to serve as poll workers in their communities to do their part in making sure we have safe, fair, and efficient elections.

Vote Forward

Writing letters to voters is one of the most effective ways to help increase election turnout.

In 2022, OBB Cares teamed up with Vote Forward, whose mission is to empower grassroots volunteers to encourage their fellow citizens in underrepresented communities to vote.

We sent heartfelt handwritten letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters in key states encouraging them to participate in our democracy.

Power the Polls

In 2020, America faced a record shortage of poll workers. In 2022, OBB Cares joined forces with poll worker recruitment effort, Power the Polls, to help OBB employees get the information they needed to volunteer as poll workers in their communities on election days.

Via our socials on Poll Worker Recruitment Day and in the months leading up to the midterm elections, we also encouraged audiences to sign up to be poll workers.

Civic Alliance
& Civic Holidays

OBB is a proud member of the Civic Alliance, a nonpartisan coalition of more than 1,200 businesses working together to encourage every American to participate in shaping our country’s future.

We were also excited to celebrate and amplify the Civic Holidays ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, which are nonpartisan days of action that strengthen and celebrate our country’s democracy and include National Voter Registration Day, National Voter Education Week, Vote Early Day, and Election Hero Day.

STORYTELLING

#VoteWithUs

Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, OBB Cares worked with #VoteWithUs, a movement to mobilize the largest early vote in American history.

We worked with Justin Bieber, SB Projects and #VoteWithUs to create a PSA to remind people that there’s not just one day people can vote - it’s an election season, and most Americans can head to the polls early. Justin shared the spot with his 150 million followers on Instagram.

We also worked with Demi Lovato to create a PSA encouraging people to join the #VoteWithUs virtual rally. The rally sought to educate, motivate, and mobilize young voters across the country by spotlighting youth activists and providing valuable voter education resources from a coalition of partners. Demi shared this message with her 90 million followers on Instagram.

250,000 viewers tuned in to the rally hosted on Vote Early Day in 2020 to get the tools they needed to vote with confidence and in community.

I am a voter.

OBB Cares is proud to partner with I am a voter., a nonpartisan movement that aims to create a cultural shift around voting and civic engagement by unifying around a central truth: our democracy works best when we all participate.

We teamed up with Hailey Bieber, I am a voter., and AMC Theatres to produce a PSA that encouraged audiences to vote early and on Election Day. The spot was played before films in all AMC Theatres nationwide in the month leading up to the 2022 general election, reaching millions of people in a crucial window for voter turnout.

The PSA was also shared across Hailey’s Instagram and YouTube channels, amplifying the call to action to vote and was the highest traffic video for I am a voter. to date.

Through I am a voter.’s mobile organizing tool, OBB Cares also created a specialized code - text OBBVOTES to 26797 - where audiences can text in to make sure they’re registered to vote and get reminders for all of their elections.

We activated the text call to action on I am a voter.’s annual Register A Friend Day campaign, and around key moments and Civic Holidays like National Voter Registration Day and Vote Early Day.

Vote Early Day

OBB Pictures and OBB Cares joined forces with Levi’s, Hailey Bieber, model Natalia Bryant, skateboarder and actor Nico Hiraga, model and climate activist Quannah Chasinghorse, and actor and founder of ASL Elements Jeremy Lee Stone to produce a voter education video ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

The video helped demystify the voting process, leveraging data from trusted sources like American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Ad Council Research Institute (ACRI), BallotReady, CIRCLE at Tufts, Vote Early Day, Vote Riders, and I am a voter.

The campaign video was posted to the Levi’s social and partner channels, educating their collective audience of over 9M and driving consumers to Levi.com/vote, a hub created in partnership with BallotReady.

The campaign video was released on Vote Early Day and amplified by voting partners.

Flex Vote Center

Ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, OBB Cares and OBB Studios teamed up with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk office to host a Flex Vote Center, which is part of an LA County program that focuses on providing more accessible voting options to historically under-resourced communities.

We hosted a Flex Vote Center at OBB Studios during the early voting phase to encourage our employees and neighbors in Hollywood to vote early.
